It's the night before A-Level results, so I'm writing this post to welcome and congratulate the new first years joining the University of Sheffield to study Physics! We look forward to seeing you around the department and hopefully to you joining us on socials this year
To try and help a few of us have put together some tips that might help with moving in/settling in.
First I'll start with the old classics: Get involved in things & everyone's in the same boat.
It really is important to remember as nervous as you are, everyone else is too and because of that they're worrying if anyone noticed them trip over a flat surface (we all do it) and not focusing on that thing you're no doubt worrying about in the same way. Introduce yourself to people, the worst that can happen is you don't talk to them again, and the best? You've just found a new friend. Try new things while there's 'give it a go' sessions on and don't be afraid to join a society because no one you've met has.
· Bring a basic first aid kit for minor things and the inevitable 'Freshers Flu' and winter illness that goes around.
· Bring an air freshener, even if it's just for when visitors come round
· Some basic repair things (sellotape , supaglue, a screwdriver, needle and thread, string) can be useful.
· If you don't have space for something on the way here, you probably have more pots and pans than you need
· Keep at least one rucksack/small suitcase in Sheffield with you for weekends away at friend's, trips home etc
· Have more than one set of bed sheets and towels because they're the things that take the longest to dry once they've been washed and they do need washing regularly
· Make sure you have a white shirt, tie and some shoes you don't mind getting drinks spilt on, trust us on this one you will visit Corp on a Wednesday at some point
· Bring a raincoat, we are in Sheffield even if not for the rain, it's keeps the wind off
· You don't need to pre buy tickets for fresher's week, especially not the ones that get you in somewhere all week, plans change and in most cases you can pay on the door
· Tea and biscuits are a good thing to have in if people come round, even if you don't drink tea yourself
· Try and avoid getting involved with someone in your flat/block early on it can make things awkward for the rest of the year
· No matter how early people say you need to look for accommodation for second year do not sign for a house in the first couple months, there's plenty of accommodation in Sheffield and you can still get nice places in Spring Semester
· When filling in the beginning of the year room inspection form thing ( I can't remember what it's called but you'll know what I'm talking about when you see it) even if there is only a tiny mark on the wall, mention it so you don't get charged at the end of the year
· Use a doorstop (not just a weight they don't work on the halls doors) to keep your door open when you're okay for people to pop in for a chat
· Save the City Taxi's number in your phone on the first night (01142 393939), as well as at least one of your flatmates
And most importantly have fun, it's first year and there's so much for you to do! Hope to see you soon (Socials will be on the facebook page and hopefully you have our letter by now)
